On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a bold new immigration policy shift aimed directly at state universities offering taxpayer-subsidized tuition to illegal aliens. In a press release and subsequent remarks, Trump made it clear: if a state wants to receive federal funds, it cannot extend in-state tuition discounts to people in the country illegally.

“If you’re here illegally, you cannot get taxpayer-subsidized college tuition while hardworking American citizens are left drowning in student loan debt,” Trump said.

Currently, at least 23 states allow illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition as U.S. citizens—often at the expense of legal residents from other states. This policy change is part of a broader effort by Trump to halt what he describes as “incentives” that reward illegal immigration.

Pam Bondi, former Florida Attorney General and a key Trump surrogate, emphasized the fairness of the policy, stating:

“Our children, legal American citizens, deserve the first shot at everything in this country. And what we’re seeing now is colleges prioritizing people who shouldn’t even be here. That’s going to stop under President Trump.”

The Biden administration has remained silent on the announcement so far, but progressive groups and some university officials are already mobilizing opposition. However, polling consistently shows that the majority of Americans—especially independents—oppose giving taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal immigrants, including college tuition discounts.

Public opinion is on Trump’s side. A 2023 Rasmussen poll found that 59% of likely voters opposed giving illegal immigrants access to in-state tuition rates. (Rasmussen Reports, 2023)

OUR TAKE:
Let’s get this straight: in many states today, a family that scrapes together every dime to send their child to college legally pays more than someone who entered the country illegally. That’s not compassion—it’s theft.

This isn’t just about immigration. It’s about values. It’s about whether the United States will prioritize its own citizens—or continue bending over backward to appease the open-borders crowd.

And for homeschooling families who have sacrificed income and prestige to teach their children at home—often because the government schools have become indoctrination mills—this issue hits home. We’re already paying taxes into a system we don’t use. Now they want us to subsidize tuition for people who don’t even belong here?

No thanks.

Homeschoolers have long pushed for education models that prioritize merit, personal responsibility, and family-centered values. We don’t need more college degrees funded by taxpayer theft—we need more apprenticeships, trades, entrepreneurial pathways, and freedom from the bloated higher-ed bureaucracy.

Pam Bondi is right: our children deserve the first shot. Let’s stop pretending that defending our own kids is somehow unkind.

This is a wake-up call. If you’re in a state handing out in-state tuition to illegal immigrants, now’s the time to speak up, vote wisely, and keep fighting for the values that made this country strong.

The battle over education isn’t just in the K-12 system—it’s at every level. And homeschooling families are on the front lines.
